As we move into spring and the weather warms up wasps will start to reappear. Many people are terrified of wasps due to the nasty sting they can give you and their tendency to be more aggressive and provocative than other stinging creatures like bees. For those people who have a phobia – and many who don’t – having wasps make your home theirs could be an absolute nightmare.
Wasps love sheltered areas that protect them from the elements and allow them to make their nest in peace, as a result of this chimneys, attics, and awnings all make ideal spots. If you think you may have an infestation here are the signs to watch out for:
Swarms – One of the most obvious signs you will notice will be an increased amount of wasps near or even within your home. If you notice more wasps the best thing to do is call a pest controller immediately and so they can come and investigate to identify and remove the nest for you.
Buzzing – If wasps decide to build a nest in your home it is likely it will be in a hidden place that you may not notice such as the walls of your home. If you notice unusual buzzing sounds coming from parts of your building such as the floors, ceiling or walls then it’s very likely that there is a wasp nest behind.
Dust – Wasps build their nest out of chewed up paper or wood, as a result of this they will leave dust behind as they chew through the wood. It’s less likely you’ll notice this sign as the amount of debris they leave is minimal.
Physical Evidence – This is probably the most obvious sign you’ll see; an actual wasps nest. If you find a nest it’s not always clear whether it’s a new, active nest, or whether it’s an old and unused nest. Newer nests tend to be very small, however the wasps may have abandoned a nest early. If you find a nest the best thing you can do is call a pest controller and they can safely remove it for you.
