Where Do Wasps Like To Nest?

Wasps nests are notorious for being found in people’s attics or chimneys during the summer months, in fact most of the calls we receive this time of year are for wasp nest removal. But wasps are sneaky creatures and they can nest in places you’d never even consider to look. Have you ever had a problem with wasps but been unable to locate a nest?

Wasps like to nest in places that are relatively warm, dry, and protected from the wind. As well as outbuildings, porches, trees, bushes, wasps can also create their nests underground. Being underground protects the wasps from all of the elements, and also allows them to hide from potential predators.

To create their new underground home the wasps burrow into a soft area of dirt leaving a small round entrance on the surface. This hole can be very small and really difficult to find as it is often covered by leaves and other debris. Once they’ve dug quite a large burrow they will start to build their nest up inside using the paper-like substance formed by chewing up nearby sources of wood.

Wasps can live quite happily in these underground homes for a whole season. If you have an increased amount of wasps around your home this year but cant find a nest, then contact us now to book a property survey and we’ll see what we can do to help.
